2020 FISU World University Cheerleading Championships

Call for Applications

The Cheer Canada International Opportunities Sub-Committee is looking for Canada’s best Collegiate teams to represent our country at the 2020 FISU World University Cheerleading Championships in Wonju, Korea. The FISU Championships are held every two years with this being the second Championship.  Cheer Canada hopes to use the FISU Championship to provide additional opportunities for athletes to represent their Country.

Event: 2020 World University Cheerleading Championship, Wonju, Korea

Date:  September 24-26, 2020 (Tentative travel dates are September 20-27, 2020 – 7 days)

Details: U Sports will send a maximum of twenty (20) athletes with two (2) alternates for each of the six (6) team divisions, two (2) athletes with zero (0) alternates for the doubles divisions following within the men and women composition criteria.

FISU Championship Divisions: 

Team Cheer University Premier Large Coed:

  •  Five (5) to twelve (12) male athletes, sixteen (16) to twenty (20) athletes total

Team Cheer University Elite Large Coed: 

  • Five (5) to twelve (12) male athletes, sixteen (16) to twenty (20) athletes total

Team Cheer University Premier Small Coed:

  •  Four (4) or less male athletes, sixteen (16) to twenty (20) athletes total

Team Cheer University Elite Small Coed: 

  • Four (4) or less male athletes, sixteen (16) to twenty (20) athletes total

Team Cheer University Premier All Female:

  •  Sixteen (16) to twenty (20) athletes total

Team Cheer University Elite All Female: 

  • Sixteen (16) to twenty (20) athletes total

Team Performance Cheer University Pom:

  • Sixteen (16) to twenty (20) athletes

Team Performance Cheer University Hip Hop:

  • Sixteen (16) to twenty (20) athletes

Team Performance Cheer University Jazz:

  • Eighteen (18) to twenty (20) athletes

Team Performance Cheer University Pom Doubles:

  • Two (2) athletes

Team Performance Cheer University Hip Hop Doubles:

  • Two (2) athletes

One (1) team per nation allowed for divisions of Team Cheer University Large Coed (Premier or Elite), Team Cheer University Small Coed (Premier or Elite), Team Cheer University All Female (Premier or Elite), and one (1) team per nation allowed for all Team Performance Cheer divisions.

Financial Cost: At the present time there is no funding available for student athletes, coaches or officials; therefore, the trip is entirely self-funded.  The estimated cost to attend this event is approximately $4,500.00 per person (CDN$).

** Please note that selected teams will be required to submit a deposit of $200/person on December 1, 2019. **

** Please note that final USports payment dependant on flight costs (approximately $3800/person) is due from all participants by February 17, 2020. **

** The remaining $500 (Cheer Canada clothing package in consultation with participating teams) will be due to Cheer Canada by May 15, 2020. **

Eligibility: 

All competitors must satisfy the following conditions: 

  1. Be a national of the country they represent (Canadian Citizen);
  2. Be at least 18 and no older than 25 years of age on the 31st December of the year of the event. Athletes must be born between 01/01/1995 and the 31/12/2002;
  3. All competitors must complete the FISU Academic Eligibility Form. The original, hardcopy form must be signed and sealed by the School Registrar and mailed to U Sports.

All coaches must satisfy the following conditions: 

  1. Submit a current Criminal Record Check;
  2. Submit their certificate for Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders (or complete upon selection).

Applicants: Programs must submit applications to Cheer Canada meeting the following criteria:

  1. Be a current member of Cheer Canada (through their PSO);
  2. Provide the event division their program would compete in; 
  3. Submit competitive results for the 2018-19 season through to present season;
  4. Submit a video of their last season and/or current team performance, following the above divisions.

Adjudication: An impartial judging panel will be assembled and will be comprised of a minimum of Five (5) judges from across the country who are ICU level 2 trained and certified.  Judges shall use the ICU judging criteria to evaluate each video submission.

Application Fee: 

  • Programs applying for a Team entry must also include a fee of $200
  • Programs applying for a duo entry must also include a fee of $50

Selection Dates:  The final teams will be selected no later than November 8, 2019.  Only the selected programs will be notified.
