All Star Age Grid, 2018/19

Largely through the creation and foresight of the USASF, Cheerleading has grown quickly in North America. With this growth, the landscape of governance in both North America and internationally is also changing. Canada is in a unique position in the world of cheerleading because of our proximity to the USA. Ideally, age grids throughout the world will become consistent, but currently, because many of our Canadian teams compete in the USA, the age grids we have followed are those of the USASF, which currently differs from those of the IASF. Accordingly, Cheer Canada has reviewed several age grids, including Australia’s, and examined the needs of our participants

Cheer Canada is pleased to publish formal age grid for All Star cheer for the 2018-19 season. This age grid lists the many divisions that may be offered by an event producer. If a division is deep, the event producer may elect to subdivide the divisions based on team size.

For the most part, the All Star age grid below follows that of the USASF, but there are some notable differences highlighted in yellow. (not sure these are highlighted as yellow on the site)

  • Cheer Canada has created opportunities for young adults to continue to compete after they “age out” of Senior divisions by offering new Open categories for athletes aged 17 and older,  as well as non-tumbling divisions enabling Long Term Athlete Development and cheerleading as a Sport For Life.
  • Cheer Canada has increased some of the lower ages of certain age ranges. One difference is that an age category such as “youth” does not have the same minimum age in prep divisions as youth in Level 5. This allows flexibility without  imposing higher minimum ages on all divisions to ensure safety and the social development of athletes.
  • We have included specific IASF divisions to provide the opportunity for teams competing at International competitions such as Summit, where the IASF age grids are followed.

As this is Cheer Canada’s first standardized age grid for All Star Cheer, we know there will be many comments. This, we expect, will lead to additional clarifications. Please note that Cheer Canada will not be making changes to this age grid for the 2018-2019 season but the Cheer Canada All Star committee will review and analyze your feedback over the next season.

Age Grid by Birth Date

We have received several request for clarification regarding specific athletes and where they fall in the age grid based on their birth dates.  To assist our stakeholders we have created an Excel Spreadsheet below that can be downloaded. Plug in an athlete’s birth date and it will calculate his or her age based on the Cheer Canada Age Grid and the IASF Age Grid. Birth dates should be typed in using YYYY-MM-DD format.

If a division is deep, the event producer may elect to subdivide the divisions based on team size. Cheer Canada recommends to split the divisions equally so there will be 50% of the teams in each division.

Principle differences between Recreation and Prep:
– Recreation is intended as an introduction to cheerleading
– The routine is shorter at 1:30, with modified rules and therefore less hours of instruction is recommended
– The routine will be a performance and will not be judged against other teams
– Cheer Canada recommends that recreational teams do not travel out of province and schedule fewer performances
– Cheer Canada recommends athletes to perform in t-shirt and shorts or practice wear

Principle differences between Prep and All Star:
– Prep is intended as a more affordable avenue to participate in competitive cheerleading
– The routine is shorter at 2:00 with no tosses and therefore less hours of instruction is recommended
– Cheer Canada recommends a shorter season (8 months or less) with no travel outside of the program’s province
– Cheer Canada recommends a simpler, less costly uniform
